John Talabot – 𝑓IN
I like the ambiguity of the title of this record. That cursive ‘f’. Is it meant to be pronounced “fin”, as in ‘end’ (or, more mundanely, part of an animal…I hope not) – or “sin” (using the Olde English f for “ess” sound)? I like the latter idea, because ‘sin’, hidden, but also in plain sight, is a little bit what this album sounds like. Recorded in Barcelona, it conjures up sticky nights in the city, with actual jungle noises in the opening track a simple metaphor for the urban jungle. It’s also soulful and joyful in parts. Rarely does house music work so well in an album format.
